The use of Mesalin in your pet. Background. Your bitch has been mated accidentally.Having discussed the options available with your Vet,it has been decided to inject her with a product called Mesalin.Mesalin is a low dose oestrogen product licensed for the prevention of unwanted pregnancy in bitches.
Mesalin Treatment will involve your bitch being injected on days three and five after the mismating (where the day of mismating is counted as day 0).Where the timing of mismating is unknownor multiple mismatings have occurred a third injection on day seven may be advised.
What you should know about the use of Mesalin Whilst Mesalin has been specifically formulated to reduce any risks, you should note the following points: 1. Mesalin is 95-98% effective in the prevention of pregnancy when used at the correct timings;it is not 100%. It is therefore recognised that pregnancy may continue in a small proportion of bitches. Returning your bitch to your Vets. around four weeks after the mismating will enable pregnancy diagnosis to be carried out at this stage.
2. Abnormal changes in the uterus(womb) known as pyometra can occur after a bitch's season, often requiring the bitch to be spayed. The incidence of pyometra following the use of Mesalin is 7-8%. This problem can also occur in untreated bitches after a normal season.
3. Oestrogens have been known to cause blood cell abnormalities, but this has not been noted with the use of Mesalin.
4. Mesalin should not prolong your bitch's season as can occur with higher doses of oestrogens. However, it is not advised to repeat the course of Mesalin in the same season and so your bitch should be kept seperate from entire male dogs until all signs of her season have completely disappeared.
